The dachshund beagle mix is a lively and fun-loving crossbreed, which combines the best of both parental breeds’ whimsical personalities.

This article takes a closer look into variations in the physical appearance of a dachshund beagle mix, as well as into their temperament, and activity requirements. It also describes any potential health issues this mix may encounter. Finally, it gives you a better idea of whether the dachshund beagle mix is a suitable dog for your family.

What is a Dachshund Beagle Mix?

The dachshund beagle mix is simply a cross between a dachshund and a beagle. This most impressive crossbreed serves to recreate the best of both dog types and combines them into one stunningly looking mix.

You may often hear this crossbreed referred to as a Doxle. Though this isn’t the usual common name like in case of many other mixes, it is the one that is just simple and easy enough to remember.

The Doxle is probably the most common nickname for a dachshund beagle mix. However, you may hear its other less popular nickname,-Beaschund.
Let’s have a closer look at the history of this crossbreed. A well-known fact is that both dachshunds and beagles were bred to hunt. Back a few centuries ago, the breeders started to produce dachshunds for tracking a small game. Wiener dogs’ small body structure made them ideal for chasing the small prey, both overground and underground. Their main goal was to hunt animals such as badgers, foxes, and rabbits.

On the other hand, beagles were bred many centuries back for hunting a wide range of game. Their main objectives included hares, deers, boars, game birds, and rabbits.

Nowadays, even though there may be not much demand for hunting dogs, both of these breeds are very popular due to their fantastic loyalty and laid back temperament. They indeed are a joy to have as a companion in your house.

Dachshund Beagle Mix Physical Appearance

The dachshund beagle mix can vary greatly in its appearance. However, one thing that tends to stay the same is its typical colouring. There are few common colours of Doxle’s coat, including:

  • Black
  • Brown
  • White
  • A combination of black and tan

Most dachshund beagle crosses tend to have floppy ears, large round eyes, and a long muzzle. It usually resembles more the form of the beagle’s face shape. These distinguishing features are often matched with a dachshund’s slim and short-legged body type.

A fully-grown Doxle will often weigh anything between 20 to 30 pounds. It will also be somewhere between 9 to 12 inches in overall height.
The majority of the dachshund beagle mixes have a short and smooth coat. However, yet again, if the dachshund on the parent side was long-haired, the chances are the pup may also have this type of coating.
Overall, most dogs resulting from this crossbreeding will take their appearance from both of their parents.

Temperament and Activity Requirements

Amongst one of the best qualities of the dachshund beagle mix is their superb temperament. These loyal well-mannered dogs will suit all families, including the ones with children.

It is primarily due to the beagle’s character. Beagles are well known for getting along with almost anyone, with those who’ve raised them and also with those they come across in everyday life. They have one of the most laid back and chilled temperaments and are the happiest of dogs when surrounded by humans.

The dachshund is also good with people. Though not always as well-mannered as a beagle, yet dachshund’s loyalty knows no bounds. They are also the boldest and bravest of small sized dogs and work hard to guard and protect their beloved owners.

When you combine these two amazing dogs, you get the best of their personality traits. A dachshund beagle mix is a fantastic loyal companion who is an absolute joy to spend time with.

In terms of the activity levels, don’t get misled that a small dog such as this will not need much exercise.
Though Doxles may not cope with very long walks, they still need to go out a couple of times daily for shorter spurts of exercise.

In fact, both the beagle and the dachshund are prone to obesity. That is why you need to ensure you give your Doxle a high-quality diet, as well as a regular amount of exercise.
Doxles love to spend the time outside. Because of beagle and dachshund blood in them, they might have a habit of chasing down small animals like squirrels or rodents during their walk.

Health Issues and Lifespan of a Dachshund Beagle Mix

There aren’t many specific health issues that tend to arise with the dachshund beagle mix, especially if the parental lineage is good. However, there are a few health conditions you need to be aware of in general, linked to the parental breeds’ genetics.

First of all, dachshund beagle crossbreed often suffers from spinal issues. They are related to the overall size and structure of the dog’s body; the longer the spine, the more pressure it has to absorb. Both dachshund and beagle parents are genetically predisposed to intervertebral disk disease because of their elongated body structure. That is why dachshund beagle mix is prone to intervertebral disk disease like its parental breeds.
It is essential to pick up and handle your Doxle in the right way, to minimise the pressure on the spine. Do not allow your dog to jump on the furniture or climb any stairs.
Not all dogs of this mix will encounter spine related problems. Yet it’s well worth ensuring that you prevent any such issues from occurring.

Another thing to remember is that both dachshund and beagle are prone to hypothyroidism. It is a hormonal condition resulting in a deficiency of the thyroid hormone. Therefore, it is always good to check your Doxle regularly for any hormonal misbalances.

Also, pay close attention to your dachshund beagle mix’ eye condition. Bot beagles and dachshunds are susceptible to few eyes problems, including glaucoma, cataracts, and eye infections.

Finally, regularly check and clean your Doxle’s ears. This crossbreed is susceptible to ear infections due to its long floppy ears! If your dog is continuously shaking or tilting the head, and there is a bad odor coming from the ears, it most certainly has an ear infection.

Doxle’s life expectancy

The average lifespan of the dachshund beagle mix is 12 to 15 years.

To increase your Doxle’s lifespan, we thoroughly recommend to register your dog with your local vet and ensure it receives regular check-ups. It is always best to diagnose any conditions at an early stage and to treat straight away.

Is a Doxle the Right Dog for You?

Dachshund Beagle mix

You may now be wondering if the dachshund beagle mix would fit into your life? I can reassure you that this crossbreed is perhaps one of the friendliest dogs around. It is most certainly an excellent choice to have in any family.

Below are just a few reasons why this mix is on the top of our list of the most recommended breeds:

  • They are playful – Doxles love to have fun with those around them and will seek out ways to amuse both themselves and you as they do!
  • They adapt very quickly to the living environment they’re placed in. Many can, in fact, live in small apartments as long as they get plentiful exercises and activity.
  • They love to please their owners – The beagle trait shows itself here. As a result, dachshund beagle mixes are the most thoughtful and pleasing dogs. They will want to please their owner as often as possible, in return for praise and affection.
  • They are an intelligent breed – Both the beagle and dachshund show itself, resulting in the most intelligent crossbreed. However, you will need to ensure that the dachshund beagle mix is kept emotionally stimulated if you don’t want to see any negative behaviour traits. It is important to work hard on their training from the pup stage and continue through adulthood to keep them on the right track.
  • They thrive on mental stimulation – You can have endless fun creating obstacle courses, games that require them to seek and think, and take up their training a notch, all to give them something to think about and keep their little brains engaged. It is especially important if you’re going to be out of the home for a few hours daily.
  • They are ones of the most charismatic dogs in the world – The dachshund beagle mix is merely fun to be around and will bring enjoyment to every family member and anyone who comes into contact with them. Doxles are indeed full of zest.
  • They are loyal to a fault to their human family – Once the dachshund beagle mix established who is the pack leader, it will follow you around and try to protect you all the time. However, you need to lay down ground rules from day one to ensure your pet is not overprotective. Once the Doxle knows its place, it will take up the role with ease and always be loyal to you.
  • They have a sensitive and caring nature – Dachshunds are incredibly loyal and caring dogs, beagles are by nature one of the gentlest and sweetest breeds known. Therefore when you combine their characters together, you’ll end up with a very kind and gentle soul.

  1. I adopted one from a shelter 15 years ago and she just passed on. She was one of the most loving dogs and loyal. She got along with everyone once she met them. She loved to run and chase rabbits, mice, moles and squirrels. We had acreage so she had room to run and loved it yet we also had a winter home without room to run and she did great with walks at least twice a day.. The last few years of her life she just had to eat a low fat and low protein diet due to pancreatitis and some kidney issues. But the minor change in her diet was easy and worked well. She did end up with glaucoma but it never slowed her down. I would definitely get another one of this breed if I was to get another dog in the future

  2. I adopted a 6 month old Doxle six months ago…so he just turned a year old. He looks a lot like an orange and white beagle with short legs. He is 28 lbs. He is one of the silliest dogs I’ve ever owned…quite a character! I would say the above is very accurate. He is a very good boy and learns very quickly. He seems to have all the best traits of both breeds. He does get bored and requires regular exercise/stimulation, but it doesn’t take too much exercise before he’s happy to lay down and entertain himself for awhile. He does have a long back and is bigger boned than a dachshund so I am very careful to not let him jump off of things as this could hurt his back or his joints. He’s a very friendly dog and because of his unique looks we get a lot of people coming over to say hello. He always makes people smile and loves to meet new friends.

  3. I adopted mine through the local Humane society. A sweet and loving dog who needs plenty of toys and human interaction to keep him stimulated. Chew toys are required because he is a chewer and will chew on anything to satisfy this need.

  4. Where could we buy one or adopt one ? We’ve tried adopting for the last month but to no avail?

    1. Hi Lydia, so far we don’t know any breeders that would crossbreed these breeds intentionally, our advice is to contact the shelters/ rescue centres directly.
