How To Change A Dachshund’s Name

Are you thinking about changing your dachshund’s name, but you’re not sure if it’s possible? I’m pleased to tell you that it certainly is. In fact, in some cases, it can be a good thing to change a dog’s name.

Reasons for changing your dachshund’s name

Firstly, you may want to change your dachshund’s name simply because you have changed your mind about the original name you chose, and want to pick a name that you feel suits your wiener dog’s personality better.

Or perhaps you have rescued a dachshund but would prefer to ditch the old name and gift him with a brand new one for his brand new life with you.

Also, sometimes changing a dog’s name is necessary because the dog has learned to ignore you when you call their name, and you want to retrain your dog with a new name.

Changing your dog’s name is as easy and straightforward as giving a new puppy their first name.

The more you use the new name and offer your dog plenty of positive reinforcement for responding to it, the sooner you will be able to ditch the old name altogether.

Everyone in the family must know that you are changing the doxie’s name so as not to cause confusion. You should also choose a name that sounds quite different from the old name, especially if you are trying to un-train bad habits.

Steps to change your dachshund’s name

Step 1: Name games

To begin with, you can play name games. To do this, you simply say the dog’s new name and offer him a yummy reward or a game with his favourite toy.

This technique is called positive reinforcement, and the more you practice it, the stronger your dog’s association with his name is going to be.

Also, it is essential to make sure that your dachshund looks you in the eye when you say the name and then reward him immediately.

Step 2: Use treats

Additionally, you can get your dachshund attention by hiding treats or toys out of your dachshund sight behind your back so as not to distract him. Then call his name in a happy tone of voice that draws your sausage dog to your face.

Be careful not to keep repeating the name if your dachshund is not looking at you. If you do, then all he is learning is that the word means nothing and that it’s okay to ignore you.

Step 3: Calling form the distance

Once your sausage dog knows his new name, you can step the game up a notch and call him from a distance so that he comes to you on command whenever you call his name out.

You can do this in your home at first, and then move out of sight into a different room so that your dachshund has to find you when he hears his name called.

Also, don’t forget always to offer plenty of praise and rewards when your wiener dog does what you want him to.

Step 4: Outside practice

The next step is to take the game outside and practice on a long training leash until you feel confident that your doxie will respond to his new name every time.

Tip: It can make it much easier for your dachshund to learn to respond to his name in the way you want him to if you agree with every member of the family to only use one variation of the name.

  1. Another way to change a dog’s name is to add the new name to the old name such as Donna-Gracie and over time dropping the old name (Donna) with the now familiar new name Gracie. This worked well for our 2 year old rescue.
