Though not the most obvious of dog mixes, a dachshund pit bull mix is indeed an eye-catcher! One of the most recently discovered mixed breeds; this is an entirely new finding which has understandably come under scrutiny in the dog world.

This article considers the overall appearance in more depth, focusing on the temperament and personality of the dachshund pit bull mix. It also discusses what exercise and physical activity they require.

The article looks at whether there are any potential health risks associated with combining these two dogs.

Finally, it concludes with a discussion as to whether a dachshund pitbull mix, now referred to as the Doxbull, is the best choice of dog for you.

What is a Dachshund Pit Bull Mix?

A dachshund pit bull mix is a result of breeding a dachshund with a pit bull. Currently, it refers to any dachshund type with a standard pit bull-type cross. However, this mix remains one of the most debated – and for many good reasons.

Meet Rami – The first famous dachshund pit bull mix

Apparently, the dachshund pit bull mix only seems to have come to light on social media, when one was found roaming a yard in North America.

Assumed to be the offspring of accidental breeding, the pictures of the dog called Rami went viral in 2015 and thus began a swarm of likes. The idea was to find the dog a well-deserved home and to keep him out of the shelters. However, some people started to consider the possibilities of recreating this mix for themselves.

Doxbull breeding in the UK

Nonetheless, alongside this accidental pairing comes the realization that in the UK, any breed of a Pit Bull is, in fact, a banned dog type.

Unfortunately, due to uneducated and inconsiderate owners, Pit Bulls have been classified under the UK’s Dangerous Dog’s Act. Therefore any dogs with Pit Bull characteristics can be in breach of the law.

Therefore, the introduction of a dachshund pit bull mix to the UK is ultimately a risky one and at present a grey area. Further afield in America, the Pit Bull breed is amongst some of the most abused, neglected, and the highest numbers recorded in shelters. For this reason, Doxbull is a mix with a lot of controversies attached.

However, that hasn’t stopped some people from taking the next step and pairing these two together. Therefore, you may well see more and more of this combination in the years to come.

You might be wondering, -what is the reasoning behind such an unusual choice of pairings? Seemingly, it is due to some people’s deep affection for both dog types. Many current owners of both dachshunds and pit bulls believe that these breeds have similar incredible fearless traits.

Thus, by combing both dogs together, the idea was to offer a combination of the best of both worlds. As a result, the most visually pleasing and unusual dog type was created!

Dachshund Pit Bull Mix Physical Appearance

One thing is for sure, the physical appearance of a dachshund pit bull mix is a showstopper! Dachshunds are generally known for their smaller and rather delicate of features. Namely, their low body structure and narrow facial features.

Pit bulls, on the other hand, are known for their chunkier, more substantial and steadfast facial features.

By combining the two dogs, the result is undoubtedly an odd body shape. Most likely, it results in a large head on a smaller body, or a little head on a more substantial body!

As yet, due to the novelty of this mix, it remains to be seen what the standards for this crossbreed are. Though – it’s undoubtedly the one guaranteed to draw attention to it!

Pit bulls are notoriously muscular and classed as medium-sized dogs. Their coat type is usually short and ranges in colour with a combination of markings.

On a completely different scale, dachshunds, either standard or miniature size, are classified as small dogs! Lightweight, they also display a choice of three coat types, from smooth to wire-haired and longhaired and can often be found in a wide range of colours and patterns.

Therefore, the appearance of a dachshund pit bull mix suggests it will never be 100% predictable. So, the best way of determining the future look of this mix is to see the parents.

Yet, from what has been seen so far, a Doxbull tends to follow the pattern of a large pit bull head and those short dachshund legs, with a medium body structure.

Doxbull Personality and Temperament

Perhaps the most challenging aspect of this mix is the assumption that the pit bull temperament can be quite tricky to manage. However, many dachshund owners will likely agree that it is the dachshund who has the most challenging personality!

Both dogs are, in fact, soft, playful breeds who are utterly devoted to their owners. But, when it comes to the pit bulls, their reputation proceeds them. This is, however, unfair because those pit bulls with decent owners are raised as the most affectionate, loyal, and calmest of dogs.

Unfortunately, it’s the irresponsible back street breeders and indeed owners who have cultivated an image of fear and aggression concerning this breed.

A dachshund pit bull mix that has been created from decent lineage should ultimately display good traits. They include intelligence, sheer enthusiasm, and utmost devotion to their human and canine pack!

Any problematic aggressive traits which are natural to both breeds will only become visible if they aren’t trained and socialised correctly from birth.

The lifespan of a Dachshund Pit Bull Mix

Experts suggest the average lifespan for a dachshund is 12-15 years. For a pit bull, this figure is about the same. But this is dependent on both dog types remaining healthy and, of course, looked after correctly throughout their life.

Consequently, the mix itself has a potential lifespan of the same 12 -15 years if it remains in good health.

However, suggesting a figure for a dachshund pit bull mix is problematic in itself. It is because their potential health issues are not fully realised yet.

Doxbull Health Issues

Once again, as this is a relatively new combination, health issues of a dachshund pit bull mix remain hard to predict.

Yet, by looking towards the individual dachshund and pit bull breeds, respectively, we can gather some insight into the potential health problems of the mix.

Dachshunds are notable for their lower body shape and structure. Unfortunately, this is where they tend to experience the most health issues. The most common condition that weiner dogs suffer is intervertebral disc disease.

Dachshund owners should realise the importance of preventing their dog from climbing on the furniture. They should be more careful in the way they pick their dog up. Also, these dogs should stay away from the stairs and other high surfaces.

Regarding pit bulls, their health issues tend to match that of the dachshund. They too often suffer from joint conditions, particularly in the hip and elbows. Once again, pit bull owners should understand the potential problems. This way, they can ensure their pit bull’s health is never compromised.

So, when you combine the two dogs to create a dachshund pit bull mix, you should be fully aware of the possible issues that could affect this combination. It is especially true if both dog types are instinctively renown for joint problems.

Most importantly, you should register your mix with a highly recommended veterinarian, so it receives the right level of care. Thus, should any issues directly linked to this pairing occur, the vet will pick them up straight away and deal with them immediately.

Dachshund Pit Bull Mix Exercise and Activity Requirements

All dachshund and pit bulls require a great deal of stimulation, both mentally and physically. Therefore, this need will instantly increase when the breeds are combined.

However, the problematic overall body structure created by a dachshund pitbull mix may make this part a little tricky!

Dachshunds are lively and energetic and need to burn off excess energy. However, you shouldn’t take them for long walks continually throughout the day. Instead, they need fewer shorter walks but increased yard time to potter around at will – alongside tons of mental stimulation.

Pit bulls are also intelligent breeds who need a great deal of mental stimulation as well. However, because they are structurally the bigger dog, pit bulls do require more in the way of exercise and activity. This is, therefore, the breed that will do well with numerous walks regularly throughout the day.

When combined, this mix usually creates a medium-sized dog but with the recognisable shape of a dachshund. Therefore, you’ll need to be careful when it comes to the type of activity and exercise that your Doxbull takes part in.

By looking at the individual body shape of your Doxbull, you will understand how much physical activity it can cope with. Though you should still, regardless of this, aim to exercise your dog daily.

Additionally, a good-sized yard will be ideal for your dog to roam freely. Another solution is to provide your Doxbull with ample toys to select at its leisure.

Is Doxbull a Right Dog for You?

In case you do come across a dachshund pit bull mix puppy, you may well want to consider if it would fit with your lifestyle.

Currently, many dog professionals will highly suggest that households with very young children do not take on a Doxbull. It is simply because of the novelty of the cross – it is not enough information about it yet.

Also, the snappy tendency of a dachshund combined with the strength of a pit bull is entirely unsuitable to be around such youngsters.

This rule also applies to those dachshund pit bull mixes that are rescue pets. Because of their unknown history, it’s recommended to steer clear of Doxbull puppies if you know you’ll have very young children around it.

Additionally, should you find a dachshund pit bull mix in your local shelter, consider how much time and patience you have to devote to it.

Undeniably, a Doxbull can offer potential owners an excellent companionship. It is especially so, if its incredible dachshund and pit bull traits shine through.

Ultimately, it’s very early days, and breed experts know relatively little about the future of the Doxbull. This explains the minimal literature currently available for further help and guidance on the subject.

However, if you’re a responsible dog owner with a lot of time to offer a four-legged friend, then, by all means, consider rescuing or adopting a Doxbull.
